Review & setlist: Boston matches Tinashe’s freak at MGM Music Hall

Concert Reviews

After openers by Boston’s DJ P1no and local singer Raveena, streaming sensation Tinashe very successfully brought ‘Nasty’ back.

The summer of 2024, it was the lyric on everybody’s lips: “Is somebody gonna match my freak?” For the crowd gathered at MGM Music Hall Wednesday night for R&B singer-songwriter Tinashe’s Match My Freak World Tour, the answer was a resounding yes.

“Nasty,” Tinashe’s first solo track to appear on the Billboard Hot 100, was released ahead of her Coachella set in April as the lead single to her 2024 album “Quantum Baby.” Set to a sparse backing track, the song’s simple, memorable lyrics describe the singer’s quest to find a partner who will “match [her] freak” in the bedroom.

Almost immediately, the internet responded with an outpouring of love for the song’s catchy chorus and addictive beat. By the end of May, the smash hit had a dedicated TikTok dance and 12 million Spotify streams, and the phrase “match my freak” was solidly established in the online vernacular. As of this writing, the song has over 100 million Spotify streams and 5.6 million uses on TikTok — not counting fan-made mashups, like one popular sound that remixes “Nasty” with indie band Beach House’s melancholic “Space Song.”

Though “Nasty” was Tinashe’s first breakout hit in recent years, the singer, full name Tinashe Jorgensen Kachingwe, has been releasing solo music since 2012. During her hour-long set, she gave the audience a taste of her entire 12-year discography, spanning from her most popular song to date, 2014 single “2 On,” to seductive “Quantum Baby” tracks like “When I Get You Alone” and “Thirsty.”

But first, Tinashe paid tribute to the local music scene with her tour’s unique DJ contest, an opportunity for a local up-and-coming DJ to open the show at each stop on her tour. In Boston, that privilege was given to Berklee student and Boston–based DJ P1no, who kicked off the night with an upbeat hour of Latin dance hits and club classics.

Massachusetts-born singer-songwriter Raveena was up next, frolicking around the stage barefoot during a playful, ethereal set that incorporated both her R&B influences and Indian heritage. After she finished crooning her final song to appreciative cheers and applause, the dreamlike papier-mâche tree adorning the stage behind her was swapped out for several retro-futuristic security camera poles, setting the scene for “Quantum Baby”’s cyber-Y2K aesthetic.

Tinashe took to the stage to the strains of a “Nasty” EDM remix, flanked by four male mesh-clad backup dancers, before launching into 2024 single “Getting No Sleep,” a rhythmic track extolling the glamor of pop stardom. More “Quantum Baby” hits followed, with one of her dancers occasionally moving behind her to simulate grinding to whoops and cheers from the crowd.

A giant tri-fold screen served as the backdrop to Tinashe’s set, projecting clips from her music videos or close-up shots of the stage. Several times throughout the performance, a dancer brought the camera onstage to follow the singer around or film the crowd. “Bouncin’, Pt. 2” ended with Tinashe holding the camera overhead as she laid on the stage, thrusting upwards, and “Cross That Line” saw the audience screaming and waving at the camera in the hope of seeing themselves on screen.

Though most of the night’s music came from Tinashe’s past three albums, she made sure to reward her longtime fans with old favorites.

“I see you singing along! This is for my day ones,” she said as the opening chords of her 2015 single “Party Favors” began to play. Two songs from her debut 2014 album “Aquarius” followed, and she turned the mic on the audience for her first-ever solo successes “All Hands On Deck” and “2 On.”

For her penultimate song of the night, the screen lit up with Cher’s iconic “Mom, I am a rich man” interview clip, signifying the start of Tinashe’s summer singles anthem “No Broke Boys,” obliging fans to shout along to the unapologetic lyrics, “Now I got standards/ Give a f—k how you feel.”

Of course, the night ended how the summer began: with a high-energy, provocative rendition of “Nasty” that everyone could sing along to.
