Is Matt Damon the secret comedy genius “SNL” has been looking for?

Ahead of Damon hosting the May 9 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” the Cambridge native took part in a promotional sketch that parodied his iconic role in “Good Will Hunting.”

The promo finds “SNL” cast members Sarah Sherman and Jeremy Culhane puzzling over a whiteboard while attempting to craft the perfect sketch premise.

“Experts have been trying to crack this for years,” Sherman says, as the camera pans past a board filled with disparate suggestions like “spicy milk” and “two Bill Clintons.”

When the lights go off, Damon gets to work, echoing the chalkboard sketch from Gus Van Sant’s 1997 film.

The punchline? Damon’s genius ideas (“bisexual cigarette talk show,” “Black Snape is host”) are awful.

Damon will be hosting “SNL” for a third time, with fellow New Englander Noah Kahan serving as musical guest.

During an appearance earlier this week on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” Kahan told the host how pumped he was to work with Damon.

“He’s an icon of New England,” said Kahan. “I’m excited to hang out with him. I have a lot of questions for him.”
