Widespread 3-6 inches of snow for Massachusetts; Coldest air of season to follow

THIS. IT’S BEAUTIFUL OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW. ABOVE FREEZING IN BOSTON. YAY, US! IT’S TAKEN US MOST OF THE WEEK TO DO THAT. AND WE’RE CLOSE TO FREEZING IN WORCESTER. BUT WE HAVE BRIGHT SUNSHINE. WE HAVE LIGHT WINDS. IT IS NICE OUT THERE RIGHT NOW, BUT IF YOU WERE UP EARLY THIS MORNING, YOU MAY HAVE LOOKED OUT AND SAID, WHAT IS THIS LITTLE DUSTING OF SNOW IN A LOT OF SPOTS. IT WAS A LITTLE MORE THAN A DUSTING ON CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS, THE VINEYARD PICKING UP HALF AN INCH IN WEST TISBURY, HARWICH A HALF AN INCH CLOSE TO A BREWSTER, EAST FALMOUTH, MASHPEE, ALL COMING IN BETWEEN A QUARTER AND A HALF AN INCH OF SNOW. NOT A LOT, BUT YOU CAN SEE THOSE SNOW SHOWERS THAT KIND OF CAME ON THROUGH. A LITTLE DISTURBANCE KICKING OFFSHORE RIGHT NOW. WE ARE STILL LOOKING AT SOME CLOUDS ON THE MID AND ESPECIALLY OUTER CAPE AND NANTUCKET RIGHT NOW, BUT THESE CLOUDS WILL BE ON THEIR WAY OUT THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON. SO EVERYBODY ENJOYING A NICE LITTLE AFTERNOON HERE AS HIGH PRESSURE NOSES UP FROM THE SOUTH. SO IT IS GIVING US THE SUNSHINE AND THIS VERY LIGHT WESTERLY WIND HAS BROUGHT IN SOME SLIGHTLY MILDER TEMPERATURES. IT IS 40 IN DC RIGHT NOW, NEAR 40 IN CHICAGO. SO WE ARE IN THIS MILDER AIR FOR THE NEXT 24 TO 48 HOURS OR SO. AND THEN IT’S GOING TO START TO GO THE OTHER WAY. THIS IS SEASONABLE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE THIS TIME OF YEAR IN THE LOW TO MID 30S. AND THAT’S ABOUT WHERE WE ARE. A FEW SPOTS SNEAK INTO THE UPPER 30S HERE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. DON’T GET USED TO THESE TEMPERATURES BECAUSE WE’LL HAVE THEM INTO THE WEEKEND. IN FACT, WE’RE GOING INTO THE 40S TOMORROW AND THEN LOOK WHAT HAPPENS EARLY NEXT WEEK. WE START GOING THE OTHER WAY. COLDEST AIR OF THE ENTIRE SEASON IS GOING TO DROP STRAIGHT OUT OF THE ARCTIC, DOWN THROUGH CANADA, AND MOVE ITS WAY IN THIS WEEKEND TO THE U.S. IT WILL FIRST DROP SOUTH AND THEN SHIFT EAST. SO FOR US, THE CORE OF THE COLD IS COMING TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY, WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO BE RUNNING 10 TO 20 DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE. I DON’T SEE US GETTING OUT OF THE TEENS MORNING LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS, AND IT COMES WITH WIND. SO THE WIND CHILL IS GOING TO BE RUNNING ABOUT 10 TO 15 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. THAT IS WHAT IS COMING NEXT WEEK. SO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE AFTERNOON IF YOU WANT TO GET OUTDOORS AND ENJOY IT. CLEAR SKIES THIS EVENING. AND THEN NOTICE WE DO BRING IN SOME CLOUDS. THOSE WILL COME IN LATE TONIGHT, SO THE CLOUDS WILL BE ON THE INCREASE TONIGHT. IT’S NOT GOING TO BE AS COLD. WE’LL DROP INTO THE 20S HERE IN THE OVERNIGHT HOURS AND TOMORROW AS MENTIONED IS MILD. WE’RE GOING INTO THE 40S. IT’S A CLOUDY DAY THOUGH, AND DURING THE AFTERNOON WE’RE GOING TO GET SOME RAIN ON HERE. YOU’LL NOTICE THE BREEZE OUT OF THE SOUTH ABOUT 10 TO 15MPH BY ABOUT 3:00 IN THE AFTERNOON. THAT’S WHEN THE RAIN COMES IN. SO DRY US THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF THE DAY. AND THEN ONCE THIS RAIN COMES IN, IT’S WITH US THROUGH THE EVENING. ANY DINNER PLANS YOU HAVE MAY BE WET ON SATURDAY. SOME BANDS OF HEAVIER RAIN HERE IN SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS. AND THEN LOOK BY TEN 11:00 IT’S GONE. SO THIS MOVES IN AND OUT PRETTY QUICKLY. IT’S ABOUT A QUARTER TO MAYBE UP TO A HALF AN INCH OF RAIN, WITH THE HIGHEST TOTALS FOCUSED IN SOUTHEASTERN MOST MASSACHUSETTS. THEN OUR ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THIS AREA OF LOW PRESSURE TO OUR SOUTH. THIS LOW LOOKS LIKE IT’S GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT STRONGER NOW, AND COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO OUR COASTLINE. THE CLOSER IT COMES, WE MAY GET SOME RAIN AND MIXING ON CAPE COD THE FARTHER EAST IT IS. WE’RE IN THE COLDER AIR, SO IT’S A FINE LINE. WE’RE WATCHING THE TRACK OF THIS, BUT RIGHT NOW LOOKS LIKE IT’S GOING TO BE CLOSE ENOUGH THAT WE’RE LOOKING AT A WIDESPREAD SNOW FOR MANY OF US, THIS IS GOING TO GET STARTED BETWEEN 3 AND 6:00 ON SUNDAY, BUT BASICALLY GONE BY SUNRISE ON MONDAY. SO MOST OF IT IS OVERNIGHT. THERE WILL BE SOME MIXING ON THE CAPE AND THE ISLANDS, BUT THIS IS A PLOWABLE SNOW MEDIUM IMPACT EVENT. OVERALL. THERE’S NO WIND WITH THIS. THERE’S NO COASTAL ISSUES. AND KEEP IN MIND, MONDAY IS A HOLIDAY, SO NO SCHOOL AND A LOT OF BUSINESSES ARE CLOSED AS WELL. BUT THE COLD COMING IN BEHIND THIS MEANS YOU WANT TO CLEAR THE SNOW OUT, CLEAN IT OFF BECAUSE IT’S GOING TO BE STICKING AROUND A WIDESPREAD 3 TO 6IN OF SNOW, WITH A LITTLE LESS ON THE CAPE WHERE THERE WILL BE SOME MIXING 1 TO 3. I AM LEANING ON THE HIGHER END OF THESE NUMBERS AND THEY MAY GO UP LATER THIS AFTERNOON, SO CHECK BACK. WE’RE GOING TO BE WATCHING THE TRACK ON THIS STORM AND BEHIND IT OF COURSE AS WE CLEAR OUT WE TURN MUCH COLDER. THESE ARE THE WIND CHILLS COMING AT US TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY, SUBZERO BOTH DAYS. SO WE’VE GOT IMPACT WEATHER IN THE FORECAST FOR THE WIND AND THE COLD ON THE WAY. THIS WILL BE THE COLDEST AIR WE HA
