Up to 30 cars slide off road in southern New Hampshire town due to icy conditions

RIGHT NOW WITH BREAKING NEWS. WE ARE GETTING WORD OF SOME TOUGH DRIVING CONDITIONS IN NEW IPSWICH. POLICE REPORT THE ROADS ARE VERY SLICK AND ICY THERE, AND UP TO 30 CARS HAVE GONE OFF THE ROAD ON TURNPIKE ROAD NEAR DARK LANE. MANY OF THEM HAVE NOW BEEN CLEARED. THE AREA IS SHUT DOWN RIGHT NOW THOUGH, BECAUSE D-O-T CREWS ARE ON THE WAY TO BRING IN TO TREAT IT IN THE ROAD. GOOD EVENING AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. I’M MONICA HERNANDEZ AND I’M STEVE BOTTARI. RIGHT NOW WE HAVE ON THE PHONE WITH US RICHARD ARCAND WITH THE NEW HAMPSHIRE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION. SO RICHARD, APPRECIATE YOU JUMPING ON WITH US. SO LOOK IF THIS WAS A SQUALL SITUATION OR SOMETHING SIMILAR, WE KNOW THAT A LOT OF STUFF CAN HAPPEN REALLY QUICKLY IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, AND VISIBILITY CAN REALLY DROP DOWN. SO WHAT IS IT? THE REPORT THAT THAT YOU GUYS ARE HEARING AND HOW ARE YOUR CREWS RESPONDING TO THIS AREA? WELL, HI, WE’RE WE’RE HEARING IS A ROADS ARE ICING UP PRETTY QUICKLY FROM THESE SQUALLS. THE THE ROAD TEMPERATURES AROUND 30. THE AIR TEMPERATURES AROUND 30. AND IT’S JUST ENOUGH SNOW TO MAKE THINGS VERY SLIPPERY. WE WE’RE OUT APPLYING SALT IN DISTRICT FOUR AND DISTRICT ONE. AND EVEN DISTRICT THREE THROUGH THE LAKES REGION. AND THEY’RE SCATTERED THROUGHOUT. SO IT’S HARD TO SAY IT’S STATEWIDE BECAUSE IT’S NOT IT’S ALL OVER NEW HAMPSHIRE IN PATCHES. SO HOW CHALLENGING IS IT TO RESPOND WHEN WE’RE SEEING A SITUATION LIKE THIS WHERE IT’S ALL OVER THE STATE IN PATCHES AND IT’S COMING THROUGH JUST SO QUICKLY? IT’S VERY IT’S VERY DIFFICULT. THE DOD DOESN’T, YOU KNOW, SIT AROUND AT THE AT THE SHED ALL DAY. WE DON’T SLIDE DOWN A FIRE POLE. SO CREWS HAVE TO BE CALLED OUT WHEN WE WHEN WE GET THE REPORTS COME IN. SO IT TAKES US A LITTLE TIME TO GET TO THE SHEDS TO GET INTO THE TRUCKS, TO GET THE SALT OUT ON THE ROADS. BUT THEY’RE THEY’RE HEADED OUT THERE. AND SOME CREWS HAVE BEEN OUT AND THEY ACTUALLY BEEN PLOWING SNOW UP NORTH TODAY. SO THAT’S BEEN A LONG DAY FOR THEM. RESPONDING AS THEY CAN AS BEST THEY CAN. YEAH. SO RICHARD, FOR FOLKS WHO AREN’T AS FAMILIAR WITH THE DIFFERENT DISTRICT NUMBERS FOR THE DOT, WE’VE HEARD ABOUT THE NEW IPSWICH AREA SEEING THESE REPORTS OF SQUALLS. YOU MENTIONED THE LAKES REGION AND THEN YOU SAID NORTH. ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR LANDMARKS OR CITIES OR TOWNS YOU COULD TELL THAT? HAVE FOLKS THAT THEY’VE BEEN SEEING THIS ACTIVITY WHERE THE D.O.T. IS CURRENTLY TREATING ROADS? UH, THROUGHOUT THE THE CHESHIRE COUNTY. SO I WOULD SAY, UH, UM, WE’RE LOOKING AT, UH, THE KEENE AREA, CHESTERFIELD, AND SOME OF THIS IS IN THOSE ELEVATED AREAS THAT, UM, YOU KNOW, ELEVATION, YOU KNOW, BRINGS A LITTLE MORE SNOW. AND SO, SO, UM, I HAVEN’T GOTTEN SPECIFIC REPORTS THAT, YOU KNOW, WHICH CREWS ARE OUT WHERE, BUT I’M LOOKING AT JUST THE THE SNOW ON NEW ENGLAND 511, AND I CAN SEE THAT FITZWILLIAM HAD A AND PETERBOROUGH HAS HAD SOME SNOW AND JAFFREY. SO THIS, UH, YOU KNOW, THAT’S WHERE THE CREWS ARE GOING, WHEREVER THEY’RE GETTING THE REPORT OF, OF ICING UP. THEY’RE GETTING OUT THERE. ALL RIGHT. RICHARD ARKIN WITH THE NEW HAMPSHIRE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, WE APPRECIATE YOUR TIME TONIGHT ON THE UPDATE. THANK YOU. SO MUCH. AND NOW WE WANT TO CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST HAYLEY LAPOINT ABOUT THESE SQUALLS, ABOUT THIS WEATHER THAT’S IMPACTING DOZENS OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE STATE. HAYLEY, I YES. SO IT’S EXACTLY AS HE DESCRIBED. IT’S WIDESPREAD, MEANING ALMOST THE ENTIRE STATE, BUT ONLY IN A FEW SCATTERED AREAS ARE WE SEEING THESE. AND THERE’S VARYING INTENSITY, YOU KNOW, OUTSIDE OUR STUDIOS IN MANCHESTER, AROUND 6:00, IT WAS JUST SOME LIGHT FLURRIES ACTION. BUT THEN YOU CAN GET ALMOST THESE EMBEDDED HEAVIER DOWNPOURS IF YOU’D LIKE TO CALL IT, WHERE YOU GET THESE SNOW SQUALLS, I’LL ZOOM YOU RIGHT DOWN INTO NEW IPSWICH AND SHOW YOU THE RADAR, AND YOU CAN SEE WHEN THAT HAPPENED. IT WAS RIGHT ABOUT 6:00 THAT THERE WAS THIS QUICK LITTLE BURST OF SNOW THAT CAME DOWN THROUGH THE GREENVILLE AND NEW IPSWICH AREA, AND THAT’S PROBABLY WHAT CAUSED SOME OF THE ISSUES THERE ON THE ROADWAYS. THE ROADWAYS ARE COLD, THE TEMPERATURES ARE COLD, AND YOU CAN GET JUST A QUICK DUSTING AND THAT MAKES THINGS VERY SLIPPERY. SO THE BOTTOM LINE IS IF YOU’RE OUT TONIGHT AND YOU SEE THAT IT’S BEGINNING TO SNOW, EVEN EVER SO LIGHTLY, SLOW ALL THE SPEEDS DOWN BECAUSE THE ROADS ARE NOT TREATED IN MOST LOCATIONS, BECAUSE THESE ARE JUST KIND OF SOME FLEETING SNOW SHOWERS MOVING THROUGH. BUT YOU CAN SEE THEM BETWEEN CONCORD SUNCOOK THERE AND ALONG ROUTE FOUR OUT TOWARD NOTTINGHAM AND BARRINGTON, NOT AMOUNTING TO ANYTHING MORE THAN A DUSTING, IF THAT. SO THESE ARE NOT, YOU KNOW, BIG STORM MAKERS HERE, BUT IT COULD CAUSE SOME PROBLEMS ON THE ROADWAYS LIKE WE’RE SEEING IN A FEW SPOTS. TEMPS IN THE 20S IN BERLIN, WHITEFIELD, 29, IN CONCORD. AND AS THE TEMPERATURES CONTINUE TO GO DOWN, ANYTHING THAT IS UNTREATED AS THE SNOW SHOWERS COME THROUGH CAN MEAN ADDITIONAL ICY ROADWAYS, ALL RIGHT. SO WE’LL TALK ABOUT A WARM UP TH
