COMING INTO THE FORECAST THIS WEEKEND. SOME OF YOU MAY BE GOING TO THE BILLY JOEL STEVIE NICKS CONCERT AT GILLETTE ON SATURDAY NIGHT. AND I WILL GIVE YOU A HEADS UP. IT IS GOING TO RAIN. IT WON’T BE QUITE AS BAD AS TAYLOR SWIFT’S CONCERT, BUT THERE IS GOING TO BE SOME SHOWER ACTIVITY OUT THERE AND KIND OF DAMP AND KIND OF COOL. SO DRESS ACCORDINGLY. NOW, THE RED SOX ALSO PLAYING THIS WEEKEND. TONIGHT’S GAME IS FINE, BUT I THINK THIS GAME FOR SATURDAY AROUND 410, THAT LOOKS LIKE A WASHOUT AT THIS POINT. NOW SUNDAY, THERE’S A LITTLE BETTER CHANCE OF IT. IT’S STILL GOING TO BE GRAY AND DRIZZLY, SOME SCATTERED SHOWERS, BUT THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO PLAY ON SUNDAY. BUT I THINK THE SATURDAY ONE RIGHT NOW, IT REALLY DOES LOOK LIKE IT’S GOING TO BE ALL RAIN, ALL BECAUSE OF THIS TROPICAL STORM OPHELIA. NOW, WE JUST GOT A NEW ADVISORY IN FROM THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER AT 5:00. THEY ACTUALLY UPPED THE WINDS A LITTLE BIT TO 70 MILES AN HOUR. NOT QUITE HURRICANE STATUS, BUT GETTING UP THERE CLOSE TO IT, THE PRESSURE CONTINUES TO DROP. IT’S MOVING TO THE WEST NORTHWEST NOW AT ABOUT 13 MILES AN HOUR. THERE’S THE CENTER OF IT NOW. THAT’S THE CORE OF IT. BUT THIS IS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE PLAYING MORE INTO OUR FORECAST HERE. IT’S THAT PLUME OF MOISTURE THAT’S GOING TO COME IN HERE TOMORROW. SO WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THIS SYSTEM? WELL, IT’S GOING TO RUN INTO THE COAST OF THE CAROLINAS TOMORROW. IT WILL FALL APART. IT WILL KIND OF BASICALLY BE JUST REMNANTS BY THE TIME IT GETS HERE. AND WHEN IT COMES THROUGH HERE ON SUNDAY, AS I MENTIONED, IT’S JUST REMNANTS. SO WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A LITTLE WIND WITH IT. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A LITTLE RAIN WITH IT, BUT IT’S KIND OF MORE LIKE A WEAK NOR’EASTER THAN IT IS A TROPICAL SYSTEM COMING THROUGH. BUT LET ME GIVE YOU AN HOUR BY HOUR BREAKDOWN OF WHEN IT COMES IN. ALL RIGHT. TOMORROW MORNING AT 7 A.M., THE SHOWERS ARE REALLY RIGHT DOWN ALONG THE COAST. SO IF YOU’RE AN EARLY RISER TOMORROW, JUST GRAY SKIES OUT THERE. NOT A BAD START TO YOUR SATURDAY, BUT THEN THE RAIN BUBBLES UP FROM THE SOUTH, CONTINUES TO PUSH THAT WAY. BY NOON, WE’RE LOOKING AT SOME HEAVY RAINS, THE CAPE AND THE SOUTH, COASTAL AREAS AND THAT RAIN PUSHES ITS WAY NORTHWARD. AND THIS IS ABOUT THE TIME OF THE RED SOX GAME. AND THAT’S WHY I SAY IT’S PRETTY LIKELY IT’S GOING TO BE RAIN OUT. WE’VE GOT SOME DOWNPOURS COMING THROUGH HERE, BUT INTERESTING ENOUGH, THIS IS THAT PLUME OF MOISTURE THAT’S OUT AHEAD OF THE MAIN SYSTEM. SO IT STARTS TO LET UP AROUND NINE, 10:00 TOMORROW NIGHT, KICKS ON OUT OF HERE. AND THEN WE’RE KIND OF LEFT WITH A NIGHT OF GRAY SKIES AND DRIZZLE. THAT’S THE WAY YOUR SUNDAY WILL START. BUT NOW WE’RE STARTING TO TALK ABOUT THE REMNANTS OF THAT SYSTEM MOVING THROUGH HERE. AND AS IT MOVES THROUGH, AGAIN, SOME MORE SHOWERS ON SUNDAY. THEY’RE GOING TO BE KIND OF OFF AND ON IN NATURE, NOT AS INTENSE AS THEY WILL BE ON SATURDAY. HEAVIEST RAIN IS SATURDAY, SUNDAY, MORE OF KIND OF HIT OR MISS. DOWNPOURS ARE POSSIBLE, BUT IT’LL BE PUSHING THROUGH. BUT IT HANGS AROUND UNTIL MONDAY MORNING. AND THEN FINALLY MONDAY AFTERNOON, WE CLEAR IT AWAY AND WE GET SOME SUNSHINE BACK INTO THE FORECAST. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT AS FAR AS RAIN FORECAST TOTALS, YOU CAN SEE A GOOD HALF INCH TO AN INCH OF RAIN SEEMS LIKELY FROM BOSTON TO THE NORTHWEST. BUT AS YOU LOOK DOWN TOWARD THE CAPE AND THE ISLANDS, WE COULD SEE TWO, MAYBE EVEN AN ISOLATED THREE INCH RAINFALL TOTAL OUT OF IT. BUT AGAIN, SPREAD OUT OVER A 48 HOUR PERIOD. SO I’M NOT OVERLY CONCERNED ABOUT FLOODING, BUT DO BE CAUTIOUS. THERE COULD BE SOME PONDING ON THE ROADS. ROUTE SIX WILL PROBABLY HAVE A LOT OF WATER ON IT. FOR ANY OF YOU WHO ARE TRYING TO DRIVE BACK FROM THE CAPE. AS FAR AS MONDAY’S CONCERN, IT’S REALLY EARLY. AND THEN AFTER NOON, WE SHOULD START TO GET SOME CLEARING GOING ON THE REAL CLEARING DOESN’T MOVE IN UNTIL MONDAY NIGHT AND ONCE IT MOVES IN, WOW SUNSHINE, WE GOT SUNSHINE TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, AND EVEN A LITTLE BIT OF A WARMING TREND. Hurricane watches were posted for part of the East Coast of the United States as Air Force Hurricane Hunters found that Tropical Storm Ophelia had strengthened. As of 8 p.m. Friday, the maximum sustained winds associated with the system have increased to 70 mph with higher gusts. The system is moving toward the north-northwest at 12 mph and, according to the National Weather Service, is expected to make its way ashore in North Carolina.”Little change in strength is forecast before landfall along the coast of North Carolina,” the National Hurricane Center said Friday afternoon. “Weakening is expected after landfall through the rest of the weekend.”The hurricane watch was issued for the coast of North Carolina from north of Surf City to Ocracoke Inlet, where the greatest storm impacts will be. Tropical storm warnings were in for areas along the coast up to Delaware. The storm will bring significant rain to Massachusetts spread out over the weekend.”But as this lifts northward, it’s going to send a plume of tropical moisture in our direction. And that is going to mean off-and-on rain for us this weekend. The first round comes in Saturday morning from the south and then spreads northward,” StormTeam 5 chief meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon said. “Second round on Sunday is lighter overall.””It’s going to be off-and-on rain that we’re talking about,” StormTeam 5 meteorologist Mike Wankum said. “The first round is Saturday morning through the evening. That’s probably the heaviest. And it’s really going be focused more over the southeastern part of the state.””The second round, that’s the lighter stuff, and that’s going to be with us on Sunday,” Wankum said. “If you’re far enough to the north and west, it will be lighter amounts of rain.”Parts of southeastern Massachusetts could end up with up to 3 inches of rainfall by the end of the weekend, with amounts south of the Mass. Pike in the 1 to 3-inch range. Both days will see 20 to 30 mph gusts, with stronger winds possible on the Cape and islands.
