Students at a Massachusetts college were forced out of their dormitory late Friday night because the building’s sprinkler system was not working.A spokesperson for the Massachusetts College of Art and Design said all MassArt students living in the school’s Tree House Residence Hall had safely left the building by 10:30 p.m., and that those who needed accommodations were settled into temporary housing.According to a parent of a MassArt student, the school informed students living at the Tree House through an emergency alert that the dorm’s sprinkler system was offline because of a frozen pipe, and that the Boston Fire Department asked school officials to keep students out of the building until Monday evening in order to make necessary repairs.The student’s parent said their child received an alert at about 9:30 p.m. that indicated students living at the Tree House would need to evacuate the residence hall within an hour’s time.The MassArt spokesperson said students would be out of the Tree House until the sprinkler system was repaired, but did not give a timeline of when those repairs would be complete.”We appreciate that the students who have been impacted are demonstrating patience and positivity, and we are working as quickly as possible to get them back into their rooms,” reads an email sent to NewsCenter 5.The MassArt spokesperson said an external contractor is on campus working to repair the sprinkler system.The school has canceled Monday’s scheduled classes for first-year students only.This incident comes less than two months after part of a MassArt building collapsed during a storm on Dec. 18, sending debris onto a courtyard and sidewalk near the Evans Way entrance.
