Shootings under investigation on highway, in nearby neighborhood
Both sides of a busy Massachusetts interstate were closed to traffic for several hours Wednesday for a shooting investigation involving numerous police agencies. The incident happened approximately 90 minutes after another shooting was reported in a neighborhood nearby but officials have not said whether the two incidents are related. The first shooting was reported at approximately 2:13 p.m. in the area of Heroult Road, according to Worcester Police Department spokesperson Joe Cersosimo. The man who was shot was taken to the hospital but there was no information available about his condition. Yellow crime scene tape was seen surrounding a white home and police were seen meeting outside. Grace and Kennedy Piekos said they were getting off the school bus when they heard pops and saw a man running away. Other witnesses said the injured man was taken out of bushes in the area and loaded into an ambulance. At approximately 3:40 p.m., troopers and Worcester police responded to reports of a man with a firearm on Interstate 190, Trooper Brandon Doherty said. Both sides of the highway were closed after the incident at a point approximately one-quarter mile from the home where the previous shooting was reported. Ali Impomeni said a man with a gun came within about 5 feet of her car on I-190. “Right when he got up to my car, that’s when we started hearing gunshots but it was from the cops,” she said.Impomeni and her passenger described seeing the man run about 50 feet more before raising his weapon and suddenly falling to the ground.Sky5 flew over the interstate and saw numerous police and emergency vehicles on the roadway. Crime scene tape was hung across both sides of the highway and a line of officers walked the road in an apparent sweep for evidence. “At this time the scene is secure, the man is in custody, and officials closed I-190 to conduct an investigation,” Doherty said. The highway reopened at approximately 7:30 p.m.
