Several defending, former champions returning for Boston 5K, Invitational Mile

More than 100 professional athletes from around the globe, including defending and former champions, will return for a pair of Boston Athletic Association races that will kick off Patriots’ Day weekend.First up on the morning of April 19, the professional athletes will lead a field of more than 10,000 participants along a new route for the Boston 5K. The race will finish at the Boston Marathon Finish Line on Boylston Street for the first time.Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, a 2022 champion from Canada, and his fellow Canadian Olympians Justyn Knight and Thomas Fafard headline the men’s field.For the women, Biya Simbassa will try to extend the American winning streak to three against the fastest woman in the field, Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa.Reigning wheelchair division champions Marcel Hug and Eden Rainbow-Cooper also return to defend their titles.For the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, 2024 champion Casey Comber hopes to become the first man to win back-to-back years since Olympic medalist Nick Willis did so in 2013 and 2014. Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka will make her debut in the race and will be challenged by 2022 NCAA Indoor mile champion Micaela Degenero.In addition to the professionals, student-athletes from each of the eight cities and towns that make up the Boston Marathon route will compete in a Scholastic Mile and Middle School 1K.
