
Monster truck hits wire, brings down utility poles at Maine show

Several people were injured at a monster truck show in Maine on Saturday when one of the trucks caused a crash involving a utility pole.The crash happened just before 2 p.m. at the Topsham Fairgrounds, while monster trucks were circling a dirt track during an event.Officials said one of the trucks clipped a utility wire in mid-air during a jump and dragged down several utility poles, one of which landed near the spectator section.”Everything happened so fast. The transformer came down literally within feet of us,” said Mike Herson, one of the spectators at the monster truck show. “I quickly picked (my son) up, grabbed him and walked out of the way, but it all happened so fast.”Two of the injured spectators were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated. Officials did not have further information about the severity of those spectators’ injuries.Several other people were treated for minor injuries, according to officials.Power was immediately shut down in the area and was not restored until around 4:30 p.m., allowing crews to safely treat those involved in the accident.The show, which started Friday and was slated to finish Saturday, is part of the Renegade Monster Truck Tour. WMTW, WCVB’s sister station in Portland, Maine, contacted the promotion for comment but had not heard back as of late Saturday night.The driver of the truck was not injured during the incident. Topsham police said they are continuing to investigate the crash.
