The staff at Massachusetts General Hospital pulled out all the stops to help a man facing a terminal diagnosis and his beloved bride get married in a special ceremony.Stephen Ruma is a survivor of kidney cancer and multiple heart attacks, but he now has terminal heart failure. The last 30 days have been tough for him and the love of his life, April.”The machine is keeping me alive and I know what I’m dealt with,” Stephen Ruma said. “It’s not an easy fix. If it was, it would’ve been done.””The hardest part is knowing that he may never come home, and we need a miracle,” April Ruma said while fighting back tears.Stephen had just conquered kidney cancer in August when he suffered his third heart attack, and doctors gave him the terminal diagnosis. Still, the couple holds on to hope and love.”That’s just it. We have the love,” Stephen said.”I think it makes us stronger,” April said.The couple wanted to exchange vows to each other in May at their favorite place, the beach. But not knowing if they could make that happen, Stephen’s nurses at Mass General brought the beach to them for a wedding.On Sept. 2, April walked into Stephen’s hospital room in her dress and the couple exchanged vows, promising to hold on to each other for better or worse.”It was beautiful, beautiful. The music. The decorations,” April said.”The cake,” Stephen said.It was a moment of bliss for the newlywed Mr. and Mrs. Ruma.”As a spiritual care provider and a person of faith, it gave them hope that this isn’t the end,” said MGH chaplain Kate Gerne, who officiated the wedding.It is a moment the Rumas will forever cherish, like they do each other.”We’ll get through this together,” Stephen said.Stephen and April pray they will get to say cheers on the beach soon.Related story:
