Marathon champ Hug, Britain’s Cooper top wheelchair divisions in Boston 5K
The first group of Boston Athletic Association competitors took to the city streets Saturday to kick off a weekend that culminates in Monday’s 128th running of the Boston Marathon.Nearly 10,000 runners were taking part on Saturday in the first race of the B.A.A. Distance Medley, racing 3.1 miles through the city’s Back Bay.Wheelchair course record holder and six-time Boston Marathon champion Marcel Hug took the top spot with a time of 10:18. Britian’s Eden Rainbow Cooper took the women’s wheelchair division with a time of 12:04.The Boston 5K featured top American and international athletes.The B.A.A. said Saturday’s 5K and mile features the deepest professional field in race history with more than 100 accomplished athletes from 19 nations.”This is just a great way for us to kick off Boston Marathon Weekend. Invitational Mile kicks off at 10:30 a.m. and features some of the top professional milers in the world, as well as scholastic student-athletes from each of the eight cities and towns along the Boston Marathon route.
