Man steals MBTA’s ‘The Ride’ van with passenger inside, police say
State police said a van from the MBTA’s “The Ride” service was stolen from Woburn Wednesday afternoon with passengers inside. According to police, the suspect, 34-year-old Thomas Baldwin, drove down to Boston, crashing into multiple vehicles in the O’Neill Tunnel while evading police.State police say Baldwin jumped out of the vehicle and ran off at Mercantile Street and Surface Road, running into the Bostonian Hotel.Police said troopers found Baldwin hiding in a room at the back of the hotel and took him into custody.MBTA transit police say the incident began around 3:30 p.m., when an MBTA ride operator in the vicinity 2 Elm Street in Woburn parked the transit vehicle with an adult female passenger inside.According to police, the driver got out of the vehicle, leaving the passenger inside.Video below: How chase involving stolen MBTA ‘The Ride’ van endedMBTA Transit Police say they suspect the driver left the keys to the vehicle in the ignition.Police said Baldwin then got into the vehicle and drove away, heading toward Boston. Transit police said the passenger inside of The Ride, who they said has intellectual challenges, called 911.Police responded to the area and observed the transit vehicle had crashed into several other vehicles and the tunnel wall. Transit police said the passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for emergency care.Three other vehicles were damaged as a result of the incident.
