Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and other leaders give an update Friday on the crisis at a troubled area of the city known as “Mass & Cass” — an area of the city plagued by homelessness and substance abuse.Officials are expected to focus on the city’s approach to addressing the substance use disorder, mental health and unsheltered homelessness crises centered at the intersection of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue. The update is scheduled for 10 a.m. Earlier this month, Wu said the city’s community partners are pulling outreach workers from the area.In recent months, Wu said, police officers and others have been attacked in the area. City data shows Boston EMS responses to the area have doubled from a year ago. Teams are continuing the ongoing effort to connect people in the area with treatment services, when appropriate.On Wednesday, the mayor gave a tour of the closed facility on Long Island, where she outlined plans for a substance abuse and mental health treatment facility at the location.
