‘I had no idea’: Thieves rob woman so fast she doesn’t realize she’s a victim

Two people are under arrest and police are warning people to be aware of clever thieves after an older woman was robbed inside an Ohio retail store.“It happened that fast,” said Denise Wilkin. So fast she didn’t even know she had been robbed for a few minutes. She said she was inside the Eastgate Meijer store when a pair of deceptive thieves worked together to steal her wallet, but they left something behind: feelings she didn’t have before.“Hurt, anger, violated, just scared even,” Wilkin said.Wilkin said a well-dressed woman came up to her inside the store and started a conversation about a sale item.“I turned around from my cart and I showed her the tag and evidently, that quick, it happened. She had someone that came up, I guess, behind me and took my wallet out of my purse. And I had no idea,” Wilkin said.It is to the advantage of the criminal that the victim is unaware. It gives them time to start charging the stolen credit cards. The first charge on Wilkin’s card was at a nearby Sam’s Club.Within 10 to 15 minutes, Wilkin said the thieves had racked up about $8,000 in credit card charges. The robbery had been caught on video at the Eastgate Meijer, and those images were sent to other Meijer stores along with an alert.Police said the same two suspects were soon spotted at the Meijer in Miami Township, Ohio. Police were dispatched and made an arrest.Sherman Gibbs Jr. and Junice Stewart of Chicago are charged with theft.“Most certainly they were probably looking for another victim,” said Union Township Det. Bryan Taylor. As the holidays approach, Taylor said people need to be on alert for clever thieves.“These individuals will come in from out of town, and they’ll hit multiple stores, multiple victims. As soon as they get possession of these cards, they’ll turn around and go charge those cards,” Taylor said.
