StormTeam 5 declares Impact Weather Day for Thursday
WE’RE LOOKING AT NOTHING BUT SUNSHINE, COLD SUNSHINE. BUT DOWN HERE TO THE SOUTH, WE’RE STARTING TO SEE THIS STORM ORGANIZING AT THIS POINT. AND BY THE WAY, THIS IS GOING TO PUT DOWN A LOT OF ICE FOR THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY. THAT MAY BE MORE OF A STORY THAN ANYTHING ELSE IS JUST HOW MUCH ICE IS OUT THERE. WE’RE GOING TO SEE SOME ICE, BUT NOT THE KIND THAT BRINGS DOWN POWER LINES MORE. THE KIND THAT PUTS A LIGHT GLAZE OUT THERE AND THAT COULD BE SLIPPERY ON UNTREATED SURFACES. SO WE HAVE SNOW, THEN IT’LL BE CHANGING TO ICE AND RAIN AS WE HEAD THROUGH TOMORROW. CHANCE OF SNOW AGAIN SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY. AND JUST A HEADS UP, THERE’S ANOTHER THREAT OF SEEING SOME SNOW NEXT TUESDAY. SO THIS IS WHY WE SAY IT’S A VERY ACTIVE PATTERN WE’RE TALKING ABOUT. LET ME BREAK DOWN TOMORROW AND SHOW YOU WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. FIRST OFF, YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING LIKE THIS. THIS MORNING IT’S GOING TO BE COLD. BUT UNLIKE THIS MORNING, WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A LOT OF CLOUDS OUT THERE, A LOT OF TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS. WE WON’T HAVE ANY WIND OUT THERE, BUT IT WILL BE A COLD START TO YOUR DAY. SO THE COLD AIR IS IN PLACE NOW. WE BRING THE MOISTURE IN AND WITH TEMPERATURES LIKE THIS, WHEN IT STARTS TO SNOW, IT CAN REALLY KIND OF CLICK TO THE ROADS REALLY QUICKLY. SO IT STARTS TO PILE UP VERY FAST. BUT AGAIN, IT’S NOT A VERY BIG STORM THAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT. SO THIS WILL BE WITH US AROUND 8:00 IN THE MORNING. NOW AS WE GET DEEPER INTO THE MORNING, BY ABOUT 11, YOU’LL START TO SEE THIS RAIN. SNOW IS LIFTING ITS WAY NORTHWARD. THE TEMPERATURES ARE NOW WARMING UP AT THIS POINT, SO WE COULD THROW SOME RAIN ON TOP OF SOME COLD SURFACES. AND THAT’S WHERE I’M REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT GLAZING IN THE MIDDLE PART OF THE DAY. AS WE HEAD TOWARDS 2:00 AND WE’RE KIND OF WRAPPING THINGS UP AT THIS POINT AS WE WARM THINGS UP. AND I WOULD SAY BY 3 OR 4 WE’RE PRETTY MUCH DONE. AND LOOK AT THE TEMPERATURES. THEY’RE NOW GETTING ABOVE THE FREEZING MARK. SO YOU’RE NOT GOING TO GET THAT MUCH SNOW DOWN HERE. YOU’RE ONLY GOING TO GET IT INITIALLY AND THEN IT WILL KIND OF WASH A LITTLE BIT. AND SPEAKING OF WHICH, AS WE GET DEEPER INTO THE NIGHT TOMORROW NIGHT, LOOK WHAT HAPPENS. THE TEMPERATURES GO ABOVE FREEZING. THEY GET WAY ABOVE FREEZING AS WE HEAD TOWARDS 11:00 AT NIGHT. SO A LOT OF THIS IS GOING TO MELT. IT’S JUST THAT INITIAL BURST OF SOME SNOW, ESPECIALLY TOMORROW MORNING. THAT’S GOING TO CAUSE PROBLEMS. SO GENERALLY ABOUT A 2 TO 4 INCH SNOWFALL TOTAL, A LITTLE BIT MORE WITH SOME ELEVATION UP THROUGH WORCESTER COUNTY AND OUT THROUGH THE BERKSHIRES AND THEN DOWN TOWARD THE CAPE. YOU’RE GOING TO GET THAT EARLY. AND THEN PROBABLY THAT’S ABOUT IT. IT WILL CHANGE OVER TO SOME RAIN GOING THROUGH THERE. AS I MENTIONED, THERE IS A CHANCE FOR SOME ICE. THIS IS NOT THE KIND OF ICE THAT REALLY LOADS UP POWER LINES OR TREES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. THIS IS JUST A VERY LIGHT GLAZE THAT CAN HAPPEN, BUT IT CAN THROW YOU OFF BECAUSE YOU CAN BE DRIVING ALONG THINKING THE ROAD IS JUST PERFECTLY FINE. IF IT’S UNTREATED, YOU HAVE A LITTLE GLAZE LIKE THAT. IT CAN MAKE THINGS VERY SLIPPERY, VERY FAST. SO TOMORROW LOOKS LIKE THIS. IT’S GOING TO BE ABOUT 8 TO 4 P.M. SNOW, THEN OVER TO AN ICY MIX AND RAIN. AND THE BIGGEST HAZARD I THINK TOMORROW REALLY WILL BE THE DRIVING. IF YOU DON’T DRIVE TOMORROW, I DON’T THINK IT’S GOING TO BE A BIG PROBLEM FOR YOU. THEN WE TURN TO THE WEEKEND. WE HAVE THIS SYSTEM COMING IN NOW. IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE ARRIVING HERE SATURDAY NIGHT. THIS IS THE MAP AT 11:00. THERE IS A QUESTION ABOUT HOW MUCH MIXING WE GET GOING ON, AND SO WE MAY AGAIN DEAL WITH A SITUATION WHICH WE HAVE LIKE TOMORROW, WHERE WE’RE MIXING IN GETTING SOME RAIN THAT WILL CUT DOWN THE SNOWFALL TOTALS A LITTLE BIT AS WELL. AND THEN THIS WHOLE THING KICKS OUT OF HERE BY SUNDAY AFTERNOON. BUT THIS ONE’S GOT A LITTLE MORE ENERGY TO IT. AND YOU’RE WONDERING, WELL, HOW MUCH SNOW ARE WE GOING TO GET TO THIS THING? I HAVE TWO COMPUTER MODELS I LOOK AT AT THIS TIME PERIOD, EUROPEAN AND THE US MODEL, THE GFS. BOTH OF THESE ARE COMING IN A LITTLE BIT HEAVIER ON THE SNOWFALL TOTALS THAN WHAT THEY WERE YESTERDAY. WE’LL TALK MORE ABOUT THAT COMING UP IN THE NEXT HALF HOUR. ALL RIGHT. HERE’S WHAT BREAKS DOWN OVER THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS. TOMORROW AN IMPACT WEATHER DAY WITH THAT SNOW IN THE MORNING. AND THEN THE MIX COMING IN HERE AND THE WHOLE THING WRAPPING UP BY LATE AFTERNOON. FRIDAY IS SUNNY, BUT IT IS REALLY WINDY. WINDS WILL BE GUSTING OVER 40 MILES AN HOUR ONCE AGAIN. SATURDAY IS FINE, BUT SATURDAY NIGHT HERE COMES SOME SNOW AND IT’S LIKELY GOING TO IMPACT THINGS. SUNDAY MORNING. AFTER THAT, WE’LL SETTLE IT DOWN FOR A DAY AND THEN PERHAPS TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. WE HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE OF SEEING SOME SNOW BACK IN THE FORECAST.

Another round of wintry weather, in a series of quick-hitting weather systems, will move in during the very tail-end of Thursday’s morning commute across Massachusetts and all of southern New England.”With temperatures like this, when it starts to snow, it can really kind of stick to the roads really quickly. So it starts to pile up really fast,” said StormTeam 5 Meteorologist Mike Wankum. As of Wednesday afternoon, several schools decided to close on Thursday because of the weather. Other superintendents are expected to make their decisions based on overnight and early morning updates to the forecast. Burnett said. “It won’t be snowing when you wake up, but it will be snowing at a pretty good clip for a couple of hours during the school day, making for challenging road conditions.”Snow will fill in between 8-10 a.m. A general 2-4 inches of snow may accumulate before changing to sleet or rain, making for slippery conditions during the late morning and midday. “We could throw some rain on top of some cold surfaces and that’s where I’m really concerned about glazing in the middle part of the day,” said Wankum.StormTeam 5 has declared an Impact Weather Day for Thursday.”It can throw you off because you could be driving along, thinking the road is just perfectly fine, but if it’s untreated and you have a little glaze like that, it can make things very slippery, very fast,” Wankum said. The snow and freezing rain should be over in time for the evening rush, however, what will fall before the commute will have an impact on many area roads.Friday will be mostly sunny with temperatures reaching to near 40 degrees, allowing for plenty of melting.A second chance for snow and rain is in the forecast for Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Another round of wintry weather, in a series of quick-hitting weather systems, will move in during the very tail-end of Thursday’s morning commute across Massachusetts and all of southern New England.
“The peak of the storm is expected to be right around midday, so of course this is between the morning commute and the evening commute,” said StormTeam 5 Meteorologist Kelly Ann Cicalese.

Snow will fill in between 8-10 a.m. A general 2-4 inches of snow may accumulate before changing to sleet or rain, making for slippery conditions during the late morning and midday.
“With the quick early onset of snow here, I do think we’ll start to see some heavier rates of snowfall at times. And so if you do for some reason have to travel right around midday, you could be encountering some very heavy snowfall rates and low visibility,” said Cicalese.
StormTeam 5 has declared an Impact Weather Day for Thursday.
“The big question here is will we see freezing rain versus sleet? I do think we’ll see a good amount of sleet, but there will likely be some freezing rain moving toward the south coast, Cape and Islands before a transition to pure rainfall in the Boston area,” said Cicalese.
The snow and freezing rain should be over in time for the evening rush, however, what will fall before the commute will have an impact on many area roads.
Friday will be mostly sunny with temperatures reaching to near 40 degrees, allowing for plenty of melting.
A second chance for snow and rain is in the forecast for Saturday night and Sunday morning.
