Former BC hockey players Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Gaudreau die in crash
Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, who both played for Boston College, died Thursday night.Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were struck and killed by a vehicle while on bicycles in Salem County, New Jersey.Police said the driver who struck the brothers was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The Blue Jackets posted to X saying they were “shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy.””Johnny played the game with great joy which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice. He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets,” the Blue Jackets said in a statement. “He thrilled fans in a way only Johnny Hockey could.”Johnny Gaudreau was signed to the Blue Jackets in 2022 as an unrestricted free agent from the Calgary Flames.Johnny Gaudreau played for Boston College from 2011 to 2014 and played an integral part in the Eagle’s National Championship as a freshman. He was named the 2014 recipient of the Hobey Baker Award, awarded to the NCAA’s top ice hockey player and the 2014 USA Hockey College Player of the Year.The brothers were teammates at Boston College the year Johnny Gaudreau won the Hobey Baker Award. Matthew Gaudreau played for Boston College from 2013 to 2017. He then played for the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Stockton Heat and the ECHL’s Worcester Railers and Reading Royals.”Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, whose lives ended way too soon.
