Firefighters battle large structure fire in park in Billerica, Massachusetts

YEAH. SEAN AND JEN, WE’RE AT IRON HORSE PARK. AND LET ME GIVE YOU THE LAY OF THE LAND RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM ME IS THE NEW MBTA DISPATCH CENTER FOR NORTHSIDE COMMUTER RAIL. BEYOND THAT, DOWN THAT STREET IN A GATED AREA IS WHERE A LARGE WOOD STRUCTURE BURNED TO THE GROUND. IN THE PAST TWO HOURS. YOU CAN STILL SEE IT’S THROWING SOME SMOKE OFF THERE TO THE RIGHT OF THOSE, YOU KNOW, EMERGENCY VEHICLES. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE WHEN IT WAS ENGULFED. THE WIND REALLY PUSHED THIS FIRE. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, THERE ARE A LOT OF LOCAL TOWNS REPRESENTED HERE ON SCENE BECAUSE NOT ONLY DID THE BUILDING GO UP IN FLAMES, A NUMBER OF VEHICLES ALSO CAUGHT FIRE AND THE WIND CARRIED BURNING DEBRIS TO THE SURROUNDING PROPERTY. SO FIRE CREWS THEN SPREAD OUT TRYING TO CONTAIN A NUMBER OF BRUSH FIRES. THE BILLERICA CHIEF HAS SAID THAT HE WILL UPDATE US WHEN HE FEELS IT’S SAFE FOR HIM TO STEP AWAY FROM COMMAND, BUT THIS ISN’T OVER YET, SO, YOU KNOW, CREWS ARE STILL ACTIVELY WORKING TO PUT OUT ALL THE FLAMES. MBTA POLICE HAVE JUST RELEASED OR JUST ARRIVED ON SCENE, SO HAS MASS FIRE SERVICES. THIS IS SHAPING UP TO BE QUITE AN INVESTIGATION. Firefighters in Billerica battled a fire on Saturday that burned a large wooden structure to the ground in Iron Horse Park.The fire spread quickly due to the gusty winds on Saturday, and many nearby fire departments were at the scene.Not only did the building go up in flames, but a number of vehicles also caught fire, and the wind carried burning debris to the surrounding property, so fire crews spread out to try to contain a number of brush fires.The Billerica fire chief said he will give an update when he feels it’s safe for him to step away from command.However, crews are still actively working to put out all the flames.

BILLERICA, Mass. —

Firefighters in Billerica battled a fire on Saturday that burned a large wooden structure to the ground in Iron Horse Park.
