Firefighter injured as flames tear through commercial building

One firefighter was injured while battling a large fire at a commercial building along Route 27 in Wayland, Massachusetts, late Tuesday afternoon.Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson said the firefighter was transported to an area hospital to be treated for a leg injury. Video from Sky5 shows heavy smoke coming from the building at the corner of Main and Bradford streets. Specifically, the smoke was coming from the roof over the part of the building that houses International Auto Body, which is right next door to Liberty Pizza of Cochituate and Wayland Town Cleaners.McPherson said the fire started inside of International Auto Body and spread to other parts of the commercial building.The fire chief also said nearby power lines had fallen onto the ground were arcing, which made firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the flames more difficult.”We had multiple explosions for the first 15 minutes or so. We did have a building collapse at approximately 45 minutes. Everybody was outside the collapse zone,” McPherson said.McPherson said there were people inside International Auto Body when the fire started, but they were able to safely escape the burning building before suffering any injuries.The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
