Classes canceled in Newton on Monday after negotiations stall

Newton schools will be closed again on Monday after the third full day of negotiations between the Newton Teachers Association and the Newton School Committee stalled on Sunday evening.”It is frustrating and deeply disappointing to report that Newton’s schools will be closed again tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 22,” Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said in a statement. With teachers on the picket line, about 12,000 students are home again. The teachers’ union and the Newton School Committee have now had three full days of mediation — Friday, Saturday and Sunday — but both sides said progress has been very slow.“A majority of today’s scheduled negotiations sessions was spent waiting for a response from the NTA. The NTA did not respond to school committee’s most recent compensation proposal, which was made back in December,” said Chris Brezski, Newton School Committee chair.“They sent us this document with no indication of what they changed, added, or removed. We were forced to spend hours going through this document comparing it line by line with the original to figure out what proposal even was,” said Mike Zilles, president of Newton Teachers. On Friday, a Middlesex Superior Court Judge granted an injunction filed by the Commonwealth Employment Relations Board, ordering the union to “immediately cease and desist from engaging or threatening to engage in this strike or work stoppage.” The judge also ordered that the union was to publicly state “the strike is canceled and there will be no continued strike action” by 3 p.m. Sunday evening. The order went on to say that engaging in a strike “is illegal and must therefore cease, and its members must return to work immediately.”Aside from classes being canceled on Monday, Superintendent Anna Nolin announced that all school-related events and activities will also be postponed until the strike ends. Meal pickups will continue to be available for families that need assistance while the strike remains in effect.
