Celtics’ star of Game 1 suffered ‘rare’ leg injury during Game 2

Kirstaps Porzingis, the Boston Celtics center who has played a big role in the NBA Finals after recovering from a right leg injury, suffered a different injury during Game 2 against the Dallas Mavericks. In a statement, the Celtics described his left leg injury as “rare.” The team said he suffered a torn medial retinaculum, allowing dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon in his left leg. It happened at 3:27 of the third quarter of Game 2. “After consultation with numerous specialists regarding this rare injury, his availability for upcoming games will be determined day-to-day,” the team said.”I have to be (optimistic) and I will do everything I can to be out there tomorrow,” Porzingis told reporters in Dallas on Tuesday. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla told reporters Tuesday that he didn’t see the moment when Porzingis was injured. “I didn’t see it. And it is out of his hands. You know, it’s his job to fight like hell, to put himself in the best position to feel as good as he can. But we’re not going to let him compromise himself. And so that’s really been it,” Mazzulla said.A reporter asked Mazzulla how likely it is that Porzingis will play in Game 3.”I have no idea,” Mazzulla said. The team specified that the new injury is unrelated to his prior right calf injury, which kept him out of action from April 29 through the start of the NBA Finals.Expectations were muted for him Game 1, but Porzingis shined. He scored 11 points during a 23-5 Celtics run to close the first quarter. He finished the game with 20 points, six rebounds and three blocks.Porzingis limped his way to 12 points in Game 2.
