SHERBORN, A LIFELONG BOATER FROM THE NORTH SHORE, ERIC SAYS HIS LOVE FOR THE SEAFARING SPIRIT FIRST STARTED WHILE SAILING THE WATERS OF MARBLEHEAD AND THE CARIBBEAN. SAILORS IN THIS AREA. IT’S A MOUNT GAY AND TONIC OR A GOSLINGS DARK AND STORMY. AND IF YOU’RE IN THE CARIBBEAN, IT’S RUM EVERYWHERE. SO IT WAS BACK IN 2011, WHEN THIS FORMER CONSUMER HEALTH CARE BRAND PROFESSIONAL DECIDED TO SET SAIL FOR THE UNCHARTED WATERS OF STARTING HIS OWN LINE OF RUMS. HOWEVER, HE DID SO WITH THE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE FOUND IN THE GEOGRAPHICAL FLAVOR PROFILE ERIC SIPPED AND ENJOYED WHILE AT SEA. I PERSONALLY LEAN TOWARDS SORT OF THE FULL BODIED, ENGLISH STYLE WEST INDIES CARIBBEAN DOWN INTO LIKE CENTRAL SOUTH AMERICA, GUATEMALA, GUYANA, PANAMA, TRINIDAD, BARBADOS, LIKE THAT SORT OF REGION. IS RUM VERY MUCH A SCIENCE EXPERIMENT? YES. ERIC SAYS CREATING THE ALCOHOL IS THE SCIENCE, BUT THE FLAVOR IS THE ART. SO SOURCING AND DISTILLING DIRECTLY FROM THE ENVIRONMENTS FAMILIAR TO HIM IS WHAT HE SAYS MAKES RUMSON’S STAND OUT IN A RATHER CROWDED MARKETPLACE. OUR RUM, I THINK, PARTICULARLY THE GRAND RESERVE. IF ANYONE’S A SIPPER OUT THERE, YOU CAN PUT IT AGAINST ANYBODY. AND I MEAN ANYBODY. ALL RIGHT, SO NOT TO BURY THE LEAD HERE, ERIC TELLS ME ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS HE WAS ACTUALLY CHASED IN THE CARIBBEAN BY REAL PIRATES. THEY WERE UNSUCCESSFUL IN GETTING HIS BOAT AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, HIS OUTBOARD ENGINES. BUT IF YOU PICK UP A BOTTLE OF RUM, LOOK ON THE BOX FOR A FEW SECRET CLUES. AS TO THE GPS WHEREABOUTS OF THOSE PIRATE ENCOUNTERS. OH, SO THERE’S A LITTLE BIT OF FUN WHILE YOU’RE SIPPING YOUR RUM.

I make all different types of rum,” said Eric Glass, the president and founder of Rumson’s Rum. A lifelong boater from the North Shore, Glass’ love for the seafaring spirit first started while sailing the waters of Marblehead and the Caribbean. “Sailors in the area, it’s a Mount Gay and tonic or a Gosling’s dark and stormy. And if you’re in the Caribbean, it’s rum everywhere,” Glass said. In 2011, the former consumer health care brand professional decided to set sail for the uncharted waters of starting his own line of rums. However, he did so with the local knowledge found in the geographical flavor profiles Glass sipped and enjoyed while at sea.”I personally lean towards, sort of, the full-bodied English style. West Indies, Caribbean, down into South America, Guatemala, Guiana, Panama, Trinidad, Barbados that sort of region,” Glass said. Glass said sourcing and distilling directly from familiar environments is what makes Rumson’s stand out in a rather crowded marketplace.”The thing that we actually go for is quality above all else. So flavor,” Glass said.With his first dog, Goliath, serving as his Doggy Roger logo, and his second dog, Rumson, aka the son of rum, for its namesake, Glass, his team and newest pup, Scurby, are ready to chart a new course for spirit success. “Our rum, I think particularly the grand reserve, if anyone is a sipper out there, you can put it against anybody. And I mean anybody,” Glass said.
