AND THE WINNER IS EAST BOSTON HIGH SCHOOL EAST BOSTON HIGH SCHOOL IS THE WINNER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS $100,000 SCHOOL ON THE MOVE PRIZE HANDED OUT THIS MORNING DURING A CEREMONY AT THE WESTIN COPLEY PLACE, EMCEED BY NEWSCENTER 5 RHONDELLA RICHARDSON, SEEN HERE INTERVIEWING SUPERINTENDENT MARY SKIPPER AND THE CEO OF THE NONPROFIT GROUP THAT MADE THE AWARD, ED VESTAS, WHICH IS THE ORGANIZATION BEHIND THE SCHOOL ON THE MOVE PRIZE. SHE SAYS THE AWARD RECOGNIZES SCHOOLS THAT CREATE ENVIRONMENTS WHERE STUDENTS THRIVE. AND THERE ARE A LOT OF SUCH ENVIRONMENTS IN BOSTON, THERE WERE EIGHT SEMIFINALISTS AND THREE FINALISTS FOR THIS AWARD AND THEN WE GET ON A BUS IN ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER. WE VISIT ALL THREE SCHOOLS. ONE OF THE REASONS THE PANEL PICKED EAST BOSTON HIGH IS THE SCHOOL’S ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT. TEN YEARS AGO, EAST BOSTON HAD A STATE RANKING IN THE THIRD PERCENTILE AND A GRADUATION RATE OF 56%. NOW, THE SCHOOL RANKS IN THE 26TH PERCENTILE AND BOASTS A GRADUATION RATE OF 94%. I FEEL LIKE THE SCHOOL IS GOING TO BENEFIT SO MUCH FROM THIS PRIZE. THIS IS JUST A GREAT SCHOOL, I WOULD SAY. LIKE THEY SAID, THE COMMUNITY OVERALL IS JUST PEOPLE THERE. WE ALL GET ALONG WITH EACH OTHER. WE’RE LIKE FAMILY. EVERYONE WANTS OUT THERE. THE HEADMASTER SAYS THE PRIZE MONEY WILL BE USED FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, FOR TEACHERS AND FOR STUDENT ACTIVITIES. THE TEACHERS ARE GREAT, YOU KNOW, THEY’RE WORKING HARD. East Boston High School wins $100,000 ‘School on the Move Prize’

East Boston High School won the prestigious $100,000 “School on the Move Prize” Wednesday during a ceremony in the city. Edvestors, the organization behind the prize, says the award recognizes schools that create environments where students thrive.There were eight semifinalists and three finalists. Edvestors CEO Marinell Rousmaniere said the organization visited all of the finalists in September. One of the reasons that East Boston High School was selected as the overall winner is the school’s academic improvement. Ten years ago, East Boston High had a state ranking in the third percentile and a graduation rate of 56%. Now, the school ranks in the 26th percentile and boasts a graduation rate of 94%.”I feel like the school is going to benefit so much from this prize,” said Liliana Vargas, a senior. “East Boston, it’s just like a great school. I would say, like they said, the community overall, it’s just, people there – we all get along with each other, we’re like family, everyone says there,” said Esperanza Cruz, also a senior. Headmaster Phillip Brangiforte said the prize money will be used for professional development for teachers and for student activities.”The teachers are great, you know, they’re working hard, they’re writing their own curriculum, doing units, teacher-led instructional rounds.
