Residents of Needham, Massachusetts, received an emergency alert on their cellphones Wednesday warning them of the imminent sound of an explosion. Police said that individuals who were magnet fishing at 11:30 a.m. in the area of Kendrick Street, near the Newton town line, picked up “what appeared to be an unexploded ordnance.” The area was secured by police and firefighters pending the arrival of the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad.Members of the bomb squad determined the object needed to be detonated.The emergency alert message said the controlled detonation would occur in the area of 135 Pine Street, which neighbors the Ridge Hill Reservation.
