The residents, and porches, of Cambridge are hosting the city’s first-ever Porchfest. The two-day music festival will bring local bands to Cambridgeport on July 19 and to Central Square on July 20 from noon to 6 p.m.

Launched with a grant from the Cambridge Arts Council, Cambridge joins Dorchester, Brookline, Newton, and many more Porchfest neighborhoods. The neighboring city of Somerville has hosted Porchfest for 14 years, growing from 60 performers in its first year to nearly 500 this May.

“We hope it begins an annual tradition that eventually spans Cambridge,” the Porchfest website states.

Both days of the festivals welcome musicians and music lovers alike to see local performers play from their porches, driveways, and stoops. Sunday’s festival, hosted by the Central Square Business Investment District, also invites community members to listen to live music from public gathering spaces and outdoor dining areas.

“This will be a summer weekend worth sticking around for,” according to the event website.

While the performer application closed on July 6, the applications to host a band or be a volunteer remain open.

For Porchfest attendees from outside Cambridgeport and Central Square, the Red Line will be replaced by shuttle buses between JFK/UMASS and Kendall/MIT over the event weekend.
