Man dies when wall collapses at home under construction in Newton

A worker died after a wall collapsed Thursday at a home under construction in Newton.The incident happened just before 8 a.m. at a home on Winchester Street. A 10-foot concrete wall collapsed and trapped a man under the debris.”When we arrived, the collapse was on top of the person, and we had to dig him out,” Newton Fire Department Chief Gino Lucchetti said. “We started our rescue operations and into our rescue operations we realized, at a certain time, that the person under the wall was not viable, and it turned into a recovery operation.”Officials said the victim, a a 55-year-old-man, was working in the foundation of the home when the wall collapsed and pinned him into the ground. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The building permit shows this was part of an extensive remodel of the home and that the three-sided wall was meant to be filled with dirt and support a backyard patio.So far the construction company that was on scene has not commented.The district attorney’s office, Newton police and officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.
