Local inventor pitching golf-inspired game on ‘Shark Tank’ this week

A local inventor is hoping his new take on golf will catch the eyes of the investors on “Shark Tank” this week. “In golf you have to be very precise, if you are off by a quarter of an inch, you’re slicing into the woods. This you can swing, like this, it is more intuitive,” said Alex Van Alen said, demonstrating the stick. Van Alen came up with the idea of Fling Golf as a kid and started developing a prototype for a stick in 2012. “You only need that one stick to get on the course,” he said. Fling Golf is being played in 27 countries on more than 1,200 courses, including Cape Ann Golf Club in Essex.“I think it’s great. It’s a good way of introducing the younger players to the game. One reason the equipment. The cost of the equipment you are only buying one club,” Van Alen said. This Friday, Van Alen is taking a swing at growing his business on “Shark Tank.”“Waiting for the doors to open was crazy, a lot of adrenaline and then once you give your pitch,” Van Alen said. “It was really just a lot of fun.”Although Van Alen can’t reveal the outcome of his pitch, or whether any of the sharks bit, he hopes more people will try out his game. “It kind of cuts through the old tradition of golf, we are respectful of that. It cuts through the stuffiness of golf, people go out there and have a good time,” he said. “Shark Tank” can be seen Friday at 8 p.m. on WCVB.
