Body of boy, 4, swept away in Merrimack River recovered

The body of a 4-year-old boy who was swept away after he fell into the Merrimack River last month in Lowell, Massachusetts, has been found, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.Azriel Lopez, 4, fell into the river just before 6 p.m. on April 19 near the Western Canal at 300 Arcand Drive, near the Tsongas Center. His body was recovered Friday from the Merrimack River in Tewksbury.”Today around 9 a.m. an off-duty lieutenant with the Massachusetts State Police who was on the river in his personal boat, located what appeared to be a body in the water near the Trull Brook Golf Course in Tewksbury,” District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement.The Massachusetts State Police Marine Unit and Dive Team responded to the scene and were able to recover the body, which has been tentatively identified as the Lowell child. It’s not clear how the boy fell into the water, but it’s believed he was quickly carried away by the river’s current, investigators said.An ongoing search for the boy has involved the Lowell Police Drone Unit, Lowell Fire Department boats and the Lowell Fire Department Dive Team, the Massachusetts State Police Airwing, Dive Team, and other units, UMass Lowell Police, Dracut, Methuen and Lawrence firefighters and Environmental Police.An investigation into how the boy ended up in the water remains ongoing.
