BCEC to be renamed Saturday to honor Mayor Menino

Boston’s convention center will be renamed in honor of the city’s longest-serving mayor, Thomas Menino, this weekend.When the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center opened in 2004, it spurred a rapid reimagination of the city’s Seaport district and South Boston, guided by Menino’s vision.”I do think the creation of the Seaport, what he envisioned 20, 30 years ago, and what it is today, goes to his credit,” said State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz, who represents Boston. Menino served as mayor from 1993 to 2014. He died in October 2014 at the age of 71 after a battle with advanced cancer.He had a vision for the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center that would revitalize the South Boston Seaport.
