Lead investigator suspended without pay in wake of Karen Read case

GOOD MORNING, GOOD MORNING DOUG STATE POLICE LEADERSHIP WILL DETERMINE WHETHER MICHAEL PROCTOR WILL FACE FURTHER PENALTIES FOR HIS BEHAVIOR WHILE INVESTIGATING THE DEATH OF JOHN O’KEEFE, ONE OF FOUR THINGS COULD HAPPEN FOLLOWING TODAY’S HEARING THAT INCLUDES PROCTOR BEING RETAINED ON FULL DUTY, BEING PLACED ON RESTRICTED DUTY, SUSPENDED WITH PAY OR SUSPENDED WITHOUT PAY. PROCTOR IS STILL EMPLOYED BY THE DEPARTMENT, BUT HE WAS RELIEVED FROM DUTY AND TRANSFERRED OUT OF THE DETECTIVE UNIT OF THE NORFOLK COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE LAST WEEK. HIS CRUISER SERVICE WEAPON AND GEAR WERE ALSO TAKEN AWAY, WHICH IS PROTOCOL IN THESE SITUATIONS. PROCTOR WAS THE LEAD INVESTIGATOR IN THE KAREN REED CASE, AND WHILE TESTIFYING DURING HER MURDER TRIAL, PROCTOR ADMITTED SENDING VULGAR TEXT MESSAGES ABOUT REED TO FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES AND TEXTED HIS SISTER THAT HE WISHED REED WOULD COMMIT SUICIDE. HIS PERSONAL CONNECTIONS WITH OTHER WITNESSES WERE ALSO QUESTIONED BY THE DEFENSE DURING THE TRIAL. TODAY’S HEARING WILL BE VIRTUAL AND PROCTOR WILL NOT BE HERE AT STATE POLICE HEADQUARTERS IN FRAMINGHAM. The Massachusetts State Police lead investigator who was relieved from duty hours after Karen Read’s murder trial ended in a mistrial was suspended without pay following a duty status hearing on Monday.During the trial, Trooper Michael Proctor was questioned about messages he shared with a group of friends. Within hours of the mistrial, Proctor was relieved from duty and transferred out of the detective unit of the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office, effective on Sunday, July 7.
Following Monday’s duty status hearing, a spokesperson said that the board of three officers recommended that Proctor be suspended without pay. Col. John Mawn Jr., the Massachusetts State Police interim colonel, accepted the recommendation, which took effect immediately.
